Traditional Science and Botany

  • Pine trees belong to the Pinaceae family. Many species are known, both evergreen and light-demanding. In our region, the most widespread species are Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis).
  • Pine trees can reach heights of up to 30 meters. They are also widely distributed as forest trees.

Characteristics

  • Pine trees are evergreen, which ensures their air-purifying properties not only in summer but also in winter.
  • Pine needles have a very large surface area for absorbing dust and cleaning the air. Therefore, pine is a very effective tree for reducing air pollution.
  • Pine trees are very resistant to winds and can withstand harsh weather conditions. Thus, they are especially important in mountainous areas, primarily for air purification and pollution reduction.

Uses

  • Pine trees are mainly used for producing structural materials, including timber, furniture manufacturing, and formwork.
  • In beekeeping, their flowers are also used for honey collection.

Relevance for Yerevan and Armenia

  • Pine trees are quite widespread in the mountainous regions of Armenia and serve as air-purifying trees and for controlling heavy rainfall and winds.
  • In Yerevan and other cities, pine trees are also very valuable for landscaping, as they are evergreen, provide shade, and clean the air effectively.
