Traditional Science and Botany
- Maple trees belong to the Aceraceae family and include many species that differ in height and structural characteristics.
- They exhibit various features depending on the species. In Armenia, the most widespread species are field maple (Acer campestre) and Nikomedia maple (Acer nicomedia).
- Maple trees grow to heights of about 20–30 meters. In our region, they are considered especially suitable for mountainous and colder zones.
Characteristics
- The maple tree is known for its remarkable beauty. It grows relatively fast and adapts very well to different environmental conditions.
- Maple leaves have a large surface area and characteristic lobed shapes with pronounced edges, which help reduce air pollution.
- Maple trees tolerate cold climates well and spread effectively, remaining green and productive. Their leaves not only are large, but also absorb CO₂ efficiently and release oxygen (O₂).
Uses
- Maple trees are used for decorative and artistic purposes, such as horticulture and garden landscaping. Their role in environmental protection is also important for maintaining ecological balance related to electricity and water systems.
- They are also widely used as medicinal plants. For example, maple bark is very strong and has been traditionally used as a remedy for skin and joint conditions.
Relevance for Yerevan and Armenia
- For Yerevan, maple trees are especially useful as producers of fresh air, meaning high oxygen output and effective air purification.
- They are distributed across high-altitude and mid-altitude zones of Armenia and are particularly important in mountainous parks and green areas.
